The chief was unable to mediate and soon, each group got so exasperated with the others that they each packed their bags and left. Each group set off in the direction which they had explored, convinced that they alone had the answer, that the other groups must have been wrong.

And so, in the north, a group of gatherers was born, surviving on a vegetarian diet. They made baskets and, every day, they went out collecting green food.

In the south-west, the people made spears, bows and arrows. Every day, they hunted for meat, their source of food.

In the south-east, the people became fishermen. They made boats and huge nets, and went out to sea every day to catch their food.

Unfortunately, each group of people only chose to believe themselves. If they had chosen to co-operate and learnt from one another, they could have had the best of everything. Instead, they only had the one source of food they each believed in.

This may be a very simple story. But it has a common theme with what happens to us every day. Don't let arrogance, stubbornness and narrow-mindedness stop us from co-operation and mutual learning. That is the best way to grow.
